But Vince Zampella says it “should be a good thing at a good time”…
Like Half-Life 3, Titanfall 3 is something fans want to see happen. The first Titanfall from Respawn Entertainment did well for Electronic Arts, with sales of 10 million in its first year (2014). The sequel, Titanfall 2, came out in October 2016, but at a miserable time, as DICE had Battlefield 1 and Infinity Ward had Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare in stores before and after. It didn’t stand a chance. It got squeezed in between the two more extensive franchises.
In early 2019, a Titanfall spin-off was launched in an almost silent fashion, building on the Battle Royale trend. After a slow start, Apex Legends is now well received, to which Respawn’s Vince Zampella has said that Titanfall 3 is not in the pipeline. In September 2020, however, the data mining of Apex Legends got hopes back on track, and we also learned that there was a single-player project, Titanfall Legends, but it was canceled before it was announced.
Now Zampella, in a statement to Barron’s, has calmed the hopes: “We’re not working on anything currently. I hate to say yes, then people latch onto that and then skewer you when it [Titanfall 3] doesn’t come. But I would love to see it happen is the real answer. There are no exact dedicated plans for that. It has to be the right thing. It’s such a beloved franchise for the fans and also for us. If it is not the right moment in time or the right idea, then it just doesn’t make sense. Apex Legends is [in] the Titanfall universe, right? How do you do something that doesn’t confuse people that are Apex fans but not necessarily Titanfall fans yet? It’s a hard question to answer, but ultimately I would love to see something.”
There would be a demand for it, and it would sell well, but if it was released in the same state as Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (we’ll come back to that later today), then we understand what Zampella is saying…
