Activision Blizzard King would have to rethink something regardless of whether or not Microsoft can buy the publisher shortly.
Call of Duty is an annual event. To do that, the publisher needed to rotate the studios that developed the games, so Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer Games gave each other the baton for development. We haven’t heard much about this year’s unannounced installment, although titles have been announced at this time. At the very least, we’re used to seeing a lot of rumors and leaks. However, this year, the pace is much slower…
There used to be a rumor that there would be no new Call of Duty in 2023, which would be the first time since the first installment was released in 2004 that the franchise would miss out on the year-end game rush, which, if it gets its ‘usual dose’ this year would be smaller in size. We’re hearing that the 2023 installment would reimagine Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, initially released in 2011… and Sledgehammer Games are developing it. It sounds like a stretch, as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II was released alongside Call of Duty: Warzone 2 last year. If they didn’t miss this year’s release, it would be a rushed game or at least a shorter development time.
Additionally, Infinity Ward has always been behind the Modern Warfare games, given that it was the same team behind the two rethought games. It would be an incomprehensible move. Add to that the growing divide between Call of Duty and its fans. The disagreements between veteran players of the IP and Activision’s Blizzard King are ongoing and not cause for much optimism.
Call of Duty 2023 should be announced by the publisher soon. This game will be released for PlayStation 5, but we doubt it will be released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but we can only speculate…
