Is Sony, Struggling With Its Strategy, Planning To Acquire A Major Studio?

Sony admittedly has money left for more acquisitions, and one rumor suggests that it could name who the company has its eye on.

A pair of messages, originally from Discord, from someone called Liz, who had previously leaked explicitly accurate information about Destiny, has surfaced on Reddit. According to the leaker, PlayStation is planning to acquire CD Projekt RED, the Polish company behind The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077. We have heard this rumor a few times before. The other sentence is also worth mentioning: it seems Days Gone 2 is in development! It’s not being made by Bend Studio (the director of the first episode, who has since left the studio, recently complained that if Sony had listened to them, the sequel would be out by now) because the team has confirmed it…

But back to the PlayStation expansion. We’ve already written that they have the scope to buy Square Enix, but CD Projekt (maybe they wouldn’t just buy the studio, but the whole company, potentially including GOG, so that could raise some interesting ideas about Sony’s ownership) is not out of the question. If it were true (there’s more reality in this than in Days Gone 2, that can be ruled out), then The Witcher 4 would only become a PlayStation 5 console exclusive, but of course, there would be a PC port, since that’s where Geralt started his career in 2007.

Sony is struggling with its strategy because of the problems with live service games. We’ve already written about the scaling back of The Last of Us: Factions and the cutbacks at Deviation Games. Both studios have been working on a live service project, which has recently become essential to the company, as it has been mainly big-budget, AAA narrative-centric single-player games. Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League also has live service elements, but the game was moved to 2024 after the State of Play broadcast failed to impress audiences, and Sony may have panicked to avoid making the same mistakes.

The CD Projekt RED acquisition is a rumor, and the live service situation is somewhat apparent…
