MOVIE NEWS – The first trailer for The Witcher season 3 was unveiled during today’s Summer Game Fest, giving us our first proper look at Henry Cavill’s latest performance as the grumpy hero Geralt.

 

 

The trailer begins with the cast introductions, which hit a minor snag when Anya Chalotra, who plays Yennefert, rambles on with her lines. But then the action starts immediately, and it is pretty spectacular. And, of course, lots and lots of Geralt, with Henry Cavill for the last time.

The new trailer doesn’t reveal much more about the next season of The Witcher than we already knew. It’s based on the plot of Time of Contempt, and there might be a big storyline from Blood of Elves in there.

We’ll see the introduction of Scoia’tael, the non-human resistance fighters, and perhaps Shani, the felcher who appeared in the first Witcher game and in the Hearts of Stone DLC for Witcher 3.

The trailer says nothing about this. But it strongly suggests that things are not right in the world and are worsening. Ciri’s training seems to be going well. But Wild Hunt and the Empire of Nilfgaard are still very much in the picture. They clearly don’t want to make anyone’s life easier.

We have high hopes for the third season of The Witcher. Many fans were not interested in the second season. They criticised the pacing and the storytelling. Even the action and the lack of faithfulness to the original material. For others, it’s enough that it’s a fun fantasy tale about a cool guy and his interesting friends. This is not to say that fans of the earlier seasons won’t be hoping for something bigger and better (and more Jaskier). But those who really enjoyed Season 2 will tend to be more forgiving of the sequel.

There’s a sense of longing in all of this, at least for many. As we know, this will be Henry Cavill’s last outing as Geralt. From season 4 onwards, the role will be filled by Liam Hemsworth. But showrunner Lauren Hissrich has promised that season 3 will be a “hero’s farewell” for Henry, so that we can expect at least that.

The Witcher season three premieres on Netflix on June 29. The second half will follow a month later, on July 27.
