James Cameron recently spoke about the use of artificial intelligence in Hollywood. Cameron is best known as the director of films such as Terminator, Titanic and Avatar. His films often push the boundaries of technology. Terminator deals directly with artificial intelligence, imagining a future in which AI has almost wiped out humanity. Of course, fears about AI have been growing recently. Hollywood actors and writers are now on strike, partly over disagreements with studios about AI.

Now, as the debate continues in Hollywood about the place of AI in filmmaking, Cameron discusses the issue in an interview with CTV News.

The Terminator director is sceptical about AI’s ability to write a convincing script. But he expresses his fear of the technology on a more existential level. Here’s one of Cameron’s comments below on whether he shares concerns about the potential threat AI poses to humanity’s existence:

“I absolutely share their concern. I warned you guys in 1984! And you didn’t listen. You got to follow the money. Who’s building these things? They’re either building it to dominate marketing shares, so what are you teaching it? Greed. Or you’re building it for defensive purposes, so you’re teaching it paranoia. I think the weaponization of AI is the biggest danger.”

“I think that we will get into the equivalent of a nuclear arms race with AI, and if we don’t build it, the other guys are for sure going to build it, and so then it’ll just escalate. You could imagine an AI in a combat theatre, the whole thing just being fought by the computers at a speed humans can no longer intercede, and you have no ability to de-escalate.”

There are many reasons why the WGA and SAG-AFTRA have gone on strike, but AI has become one of the critical issues. AMPTP generally wants to take a “wait-and-see” stance on AI.

But it is keeping the door open and holding regular meetings about it, with writers and actors wanting hard guidelines on how AI can be used in filmmaking now.

The current debate about AI in Hollywood is a complex and nuanced issue that will indeed only get more complicated as these tools continue to evolve. However, Cameron’s comment suggests that the role of AI in the entertainment industry may one day be the least of humanity’s worries.
