I must admit, I had to read it twice before I could believe that this is what Blizzard is really up to with Overwatch 2…
Overwatch 2 is coming to Steam. Yes, it is. In fact, I’ll go further: not only is OW2 coming to Steam, but other Blizzard games are following suit. The Steam release date for the iconic FPS game has already been confirmed. And the company has confirmed that other games will follow in the game’s footsteps. This means that we could finally see the likes of Diablo and World of Warcraft on Valve’s gaming hub.
Blizzard believes that Overwatch, as a free-to-play multiplayer game, is the “perfect” game to begin the Steam rollout – significantly ahead of the new Invasion PvE missions.
Of course, you’ll want to know when Overwatch 2’s Steam release date is. Mark your calendars: the date is Thursday, August 10.
If you decide to try the game on Steam, you’ll need to link your account to a Battle.net account. This gives you access to systems like crossplay. There will also be dedicated Steam achievements to help you top up your trophy cabinet. If all this sounds good, you can add the game to your wishlist now.
But that’s not all! In yesterday’s press release announcing the release, Blizzard also says that “as far as what’s next for Blizzard on Steam, we’ll be sharing more about potential other games coming to the platform when the time is right.”
So we might see World of Warcraft and Diablo IV on Steam. It’s an incredibly exciting paradigm shift. If only in terms of Blizzard’s approach to Valve’s dominant platform.
