While the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is not far away, there are rumors of another Insomniac Games project besides Marvel’s Wolverine.
The studio has been busy: the PlayStation 5 launch titles included Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and a few months later came Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. The studio has two projects on the go, but one is coming out soon, so there will be capacity for something else. It could be the unannounced multiplayer project Insomniac Games has been looking for people for. There could even be a new IP (almost certainly a concept from senior management, as Sony is keen to start pushing live service games), but if not, the studio has plenty of options.
Bungie is trying to make its mark in competitive multiplayer with Marathon and Haven as well with Fairgames, so Insomniac Games might be better off going in a cooperative direction, as is the leaked Horizon project (and perhaps The Last of Us: Factions heads that way, too). Batman: Arkham Origins has shown before that adding multiplayer elements to a superhero franchise is a bad idea, so maybe the studio isn’t building on Marvel’s Spider-Man, but swinging around New York with a friend might be fun, and since the new Spider-Man game will have two of them (Peter Parker and Miles Morales), it might make sense, and they could also pull the Spider-Verse (Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man 2099) into the mix.
The other idea is self-explanatory: Ratchet & Clank. If Rivet and Kit, seen in Rift Apart, could be controlled, a cooperative game could be possible. Two Lombax might sound reasonable. The third option, however, is a now forgotten IP: Resistance. The second part of the franchise, known in the PlayStation 3 era, had a co-op storyline, but a new live service game might bring back interest. The fourth option is Sunset Overdrive, seen on Xbox One. Insomniac owns the IP rights so that they could make a new title for PlayStation 5…
The possibilities are there… but what will the studio ultimately choose?
