Jamie Lee Curtis Sets One Condition to Join Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ Season 2

MOVIE NEWS – Jamie Lee Curtis has addressed fans’ casting suggestions for Netflix’s One Piece and confirmed her interest in playing Doctor Kureha, but with a specific stipulation.

Before Netflix’s One Piece debuted on August 31, enthusiasts of the series had envisioned Curtis as the ideal Doctor Kureha. Within the anime and manga, Kureha is depicted as an aging doctor with a youthful spirit, often perceived by some as a witch. Many fans believe Curtis embodies Kureha’s essence and appearance. Responding to this call, Curtis has indicated her potential involvement in One Piece’s second season.

Engaging with fans on Instagram, Curtis acknowledged the campaign, assuring them of her awareness and intention to advocate for the role.

Yet, she’s placed one caveat on this advocacy. She’ll only step forward if the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) strikes a fair agreement with the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), unions currently striking in Hollywood.

While many are likely elated at Curtis’s inclination towards the Kureha role, her stipulation is significant. WGA and SAG-AFTRA, which comprise part of AMPTP, advocate for improved salaries, job security, and protection against AI in their workspace. Yet, negotiations have stagnated since AMPTP hasn’t settled. Amidst a massive fan-led campaign, Curtis’s condition could amplify the pressure on AMPTP.

In the meantime, the show itself exerts pressure on the AMPTP. Given its current global acclaim, Netflix renewed One Piece for a second season two weeks after its premiere. This renewal, which happened during the strike, suggests Netflix’s eagerness to progress with its flagship series, an endeavor hindered by the ongoing strike. This could amplify viewers’ frustrations if the release of One Piece’s second season gets postponed due to these industrial actions.

According to the producers of One Piece, the second season might be unveiled within the next 12-18 months. As earlier highlighted, the prevailing strike poses the primary hindrance to its production and launch. Concurrently, anticipation for the new season surges with whispers of Tony Tony Chopper’s introduction and Curtis’s potential enlistment. While One Piece remains a single series, its soaring popularity intensifies the urgency for AMPTP to secure an equitable agreement promptly.
