The original The Last of Us Part II was released three years ago. Is Naughty Dog already working on a facelift? Sad if true.
The sequel to The Last of Us was one of the best-looking games on the PlayStation 4, but it made the same mistake as the first part: it hit shelves a few months before the new generation of consoles, so the PlayStation 5 was already on its way when Naughty Dog’s game came out. Despite this, the game didn’t get a current-gen update (there was a PlayStation 4 remaster of the first part, then a PlayStation 5 remake that was good, and a PC remake that was in a lousy state), which would have been logical in this case.
Mark Pajarillo, Naughty Dog’s lead outsourcing artist, revealed something on LinkedIn that shouldn’t have been there. On his profile, he wrote that in addition to overseeing the production of new assets for The Last of Us Part I, he is doing the same for The Last of Us 2: Remastered. He didn’t format the title properly, but you can see from the image below that this could be Naughty Dog’s (or more likely Sony’s…) idea, even if the base game was a bit divisive.
But we recently wrote that The Last of Us: Factions (that’s what we’re calling Naughty Dog’s previously announced but yet to be unveiled multiplayer project due to the lack of an official name, which is why TLoU2 didn’t have multiplayer), storm clouds are gathering over the second season of The Last of Us HBO series (but the long-running strike in Hollywood could be coming to an end soon, and as we’ve written, Netflix and other streaming services will be raising prices), and then there are the layoffs affecting the company. ..
The Last of Us: Factions is currently “on ice” and now they have another project to keep them busy until their next original game. At least 25 people have been laid off, mostly from the quality control team (but the art and production teams are also affected to some extent), and apparently the people involved are not really allowed to talk about it and are not even getting severance pay…
