There was a hint of this last year, but nothing has happened since, but now Sony is definitely doing something.
Last year we had the option to link our PlayStation Network account (if we had one) in the PC port of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, but ultimately there were no consequences that could be called significant (well, there were rewards for linking Steam and PlayStation Network accounts, but beyond that nothing happened). However, TrueTrophies has reported that Sony is already testing PSN Trophies for PC. Since this is a site that pulls trophy data directly from the PlayStation Network, something is really going on.
TrueTrophies has identified a new PlayStation 5 trophy list, with another platform listed by Sony. The name speaks for itself: PSPC. While the list is not tied to any game, it’s certainly a sign of things to come, as this is a test. The PSPC platform is a new platform that is not the same as the PlayStation 5, but can still be linked to it. It’s certainly not the PlayStation Portal (that’s more of a hardware that has a lot more potential, but Sony absolutely can’t or doesn’t want to exploit it), because nothing will run locally on it, as the company is absolutely unwilling to make a handheld after the PlayStation Vita…
With this move, Sony can follow Microsoft’s example. For Xbox Game Studios, or first-party games, several games on Steam require an Xbox Live account (so you can earn achievements and carry your save), while PlayStation Studios’ PC ports don’t require a PlayStation Network account to launch and you can go on adventures without one. The exceptions for Microsoft’s games are Minecraft Dungeons, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, and Psychonauts 2.
So Sony is already testing the waters, and the question is when the official PC trophy will arrive.
