The recently announced quarterly results once again missed something that has been commonplace for many years.
When we reported on the latest PlayStation 5 results, we mentioned that Sony had omitted the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers from its report. It wasn’t the first time this had happened, as it was also omitted from the previous quarter’s results. So this is a trend that is starting to reflect negatively on Sony, because they could have told the truth, but instead they swept it under the rug. The same thing Microsoft did with the Xbox One sales and they haven’t published the results of the Xbox series since then because the PlayStation 4 was beating Microsoft’s console so badly…
Disclosing the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers would also be important because it would give investors an idea of the company’s performance and give them more confidence in Sony. Why did they stop disclosing it? Well, the answer is clear: there are three subscription levels (PlayStation Plus Essential, PlayStation Plus Extra, PlayStation Plus Premium), but the number has started to fall, no doubt helped by the price increase at the end of the PlayStation Plus Essential games release post in September (yes, they did announce it, that was…). The price increase is a good 30%, and we wrote earlier that the company explained this by saying that they hadn’t touched the price in some regions for a long time. Not a wise reaction.
But if the price of everything keeps going up because of inflation, users may choose to eat rather than spend their money on a subscription. And that could be a big factor in the decline of subscribers. There may be some extra services on top of the games, but they are not convincing users.
So Sony is hiding the truth for a reason. Except that it is an admission that the performance is not as good as it should be.
