This ambitious title is aiming to be PlayStation’s next breakout hit—and the best part? It won’t be hiding for long. Housemarque has confirmed that we’ll be seeing Saros in action before the year is out.
When PlayStation revealed Saros during February’s State of Play, it caught everyone off guard. Despite showing only a cinematic teaser, this sci-fi title immediately earned the trust of fans simply by being the next game from the developers of Returnal. Given that the release is slated for 2026, most assumed it would be quite a while before we heard anything more. But Housemarque has just shattered that assumption with exciting news: gameplay footage is coming sooner than expected.
The message was posted directly on Housemarque’s official X account (formerly Twitter) and left no room for doubt: “Expect your first look at extended gameplay later this year.” This suggests Saros could be one of the headline games at upcoming industry events throughout 2025, including the Summer Game Fest in June or possibly a future Sony PlayStation Showcase or State of Play presentation.
So, what do we actually know about Saros? According to early details shared by Housemarque, the game takes place on a distant planet gripped by the ominous presence of a dark eclipse. Players will assume the role of Arjun Devraj, a powerful Soltari enforcer, on a mission to uncover secrets within a long-lost alien colony. In terms of gameplay, the developers have confirmed a system of permanent progression where each death reshapes the environment, offering new paths to success and unexpected ways to overcome the game’s challenges.
Saros “wouldn’t exist” without PlayStation’s support
According to Housemarque, Saros owes its existence to funding from PlayStation. The studio made a major splash with the critically acclaimed Returnal, and that success led to PlayStation acquiring the developer in 2021. Since then, the team has adapted to new standards in staffing, cybersecurity, and project management. While those changes posed challenges, they also opened the door to larger budgets and more ambitious productions—like this upcoming sci-fi adventure.
