MOVIE NEWS – James Gunn is bringing back a promising talent from the DCEU era to help create a film about an exciting and unique DC character…
It looks like Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has gotten a screenwriter in the form of Ana Nogueira. The DCU movie is still in the early stages of development without a director. But it is making steady progress on the preparatory work. James Gunn has now hinted at the project in an Instagram post.
This news comes as James Gunn and producer Peter Safran usher in a new era for the DC Universe (DCU) movies. Replacing DC Films, DC Studios aims to redefine the franchise’s place in the film world. Hoping to recover from past mistakes and recreate the massive success of Marvel Studios. Gunn stated that the new series of DC projects will have a streamlined narrative connected between the various films and series. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be part of the first phase of the new DCU movies.
The Hollywood Reporter detailed that Nogueira will write Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. She was initially signed on to write a Supergirl project in 2022 as a spinoff of the DCEU’s The Flash. (The latter starred Sasha Calle as Supergirl.) But Gunn and Safran liked Nogueira’s script so much that they hired her to write another Supergirl movie for DC’s new era.
Gunn took to Instagram to confirm that Nogueira will be joining Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and gave fans a little taste of what to expect from her script.
The character of Supergirl differs from her famous cousin Superman in essential ways. This gives a fresh approach to the Kryptonian family. Gunn’s Supergirl movie will explore this by taking inspiration from Tom King’s comic book series. These stories follow Supergirl, Krypto the Super Dog, and a young alien friend on a galactic mission to exact revenge. The series, which will be released in 2021 and 2022, was widely acclaimed. It offers fans of DC movies a hopeful vision of the future.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow joins future DC Studios films. Such is the case with Superman: Legacy. Gunn will direct the pivotal film. It is scheduled to hit theatres in July 2025.
Thanks to DC’s new approach, it’s a safe bet that Supergirl will have a role in Superman: Legacy and potentially other movies coming soon.
While DC fans have enjoyed a few hits over the past decade, such as The Joker and Robert Pattinson’s Batman movies, the franchise has largely been overshadowed by the record-breaking success of the MCU. Gotham and Metropolis fanatics can’t wait to see what the future holds. Gunn and Safran seem determined to reinvigorate the franchise and capitalize on the wealth of entertaining source material.
