MediEvil co-creator Jay Gunn announced the sale of his personal Game of the Year BAFTA award on Twitter. The decision, made amid financial difficulties and job-hunting challenges, highlights the harsh reality creative minds face in the games industry. Despite having a game like MediEvil, they have a remarkable background.
MediEvil is a series of action-adventure video games that began in 1998 with the release of the first game, developed by SCE Studio Cambridge and published by Sony.
Subsequent titles include MediEvil 2, released in 2000. As well as the reimagining MediEvil: Resurrection, released for PSP in 2005. A PS4 remake was released in 2019, aiming to bring the classic game to a new audience. Despite the remarkable success of the classic title, one of the co-creators is going through a challenging time financially.
Jay Gunn opened up about his recent hospitalisation in a heartfelt Twitter post. This was necessary due to stress, anxiety and financial problems. Gunn struggled to get interviews for game design and development jobs. After putting his entire MediEvil archive up for sale, he made the difficult decision to sell his personal BAFTA. Gunn’s Twitter thread details the personal and professional challenges he has faced. These are what led to the decision to offer your award for sale. The latter, received for his achievements in MediEvil, symbolises Gunn’s contribution to the gaming industry. “I know I still have a lot to offer and to give but the doors are firmly shut and I’m super worried,” Gunn said.
The BAFTA sale includes the personal award, a tape of the official BAFTA broadcast capturing the winning moment and an additional promotional ‘Sir Dan Hand’ sculpture.
Gunn is asking £6,000 and is open to higher bids. As a bonus, it also comes with a MediEvil Funko Pop figure.
Gunn also posted a tweet on his profile, saying he is looking for work and highlighting his extensive experience in the gaming industry. It showcases his game design, concept creation, gameplay design, writing and illustration skills. Despite his remarkable career, he highlights the challenges of getting a job and expresses his frustration at not getting responses to his job applications.
