If the previously leaked (and reported) specs are correct, Sony’s next “half-generation” console should be a product that developers will enjoy using.
Moore’s Law has reacted to the recently leaked (and by all accounts unconfirmed) specs in the video embedded below. According to him, using AMD’s Zen 2-based processor would be the best choice for Sony because it would allow modern AAA games to run without any problems and the cost of the console would not be significant. Meanwhile, it would also be an easy platform for developers to use, as they wouldn’t have to do much work to make their games run better on the PlayStation 5 Pro than on the base PlayStation 5.
As for the graphics chip specs, it’s hard to believe that something like this will actually be on the more powerful version of the PlayStation 5. As Kepler_L2, a reliable AMD leaker, said, lowering the clock speed would cause quite a few headaches for backwards compatibility, so we can almost certainly expect Sony to use a 2GHz GPU in the console, since the clock speed of the base PlayStation 5 graphics chip is higher than that!
The leaks about the PlayStation 5 Pro are quite interesting because Sony hasn’t said a single word about the console itself, so we’re talking about a platform that doesn’t officially, or at least not publicly, exist yet. Therefore, the leaking of specifications could lead to one of two things: either everything we’ve heard about the mid-generation console so far is true, or someone has a particularly creative mind and the press has picked up on it. Both scenarios are realistic at this point…
Rumors suggest that the PlayStation 5 Pro will be released in late 2024, so within a year. We’ll be curious to see the price, and also if, with the release of the more powerful model, there are plans to reduce the price of the base (or rather redesigned…) model, since it has been increased for over a year now, and as we move forward in time, the price of consoles tend to be reduced…
