Now that Rockstar is giving players their first look at an updated version of Vice City in Grand Theft Auto 6, many fans of the franchise are already wondering if the city’s most famous face, Tommy Vercetti, will make a cameo appearance.
While the trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 showed off the game’s main cast, many franchise fans were disappointed to see that Tommy from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was nowhere to be seen. While the game’s modern-day setting and the death of actor Ray Liotta make it unlikely that Tommy will play a major role in Grand Theft Auto 6, Rockstar still has a way to go to bring back the iconic character for one final appearance.
While the trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 shows just how much Vice City has changed in the decades since its first release, it also shows that the title city’s criminal underworld continues to thrive. As Tommy Vercetti of GTA: Vice City took his place as the city’s undisputed crime boss at the end of GTAC Vice City, it’s likely that his influence will continue to be felt in the modern era. Exploring how Tommy’s old-school gangster ways come into conflict with today’s criminals would be a great premise for a Grand Theft Auto 6 mission, and Rockstar could pay homage to the character even if he doesn’t appear directly in the game.
The elderly Tommy Vercetti could be an antagonist in GTA 6
One of the ways Grand Theft Auto 6 could bring back Tommy Vercetti would be for players to meet the now elderly character as part of a chain of missions. Like Tommy in GTA: Vice City, Tommy fought his way to the top of the criminal food chain and took out anyone who got in his way, the protagonists of GTA 6 could find themselves on a similar path. If Tommy is still running Vice City’s criminal underworld in GTA 6, players could find themselves on a collision course with the crime kingpin.
Meeting Tommy Vercetti face-to-face would be a great experience for long-time fans of the Grand Theft Auto series, but with the death of actor Ray Liotta in 2022, that could prove difficult. Tommy Vercetti’s voice, Liotta’s portrayal of gangsters in films like Goodfellas, helped him bring a realism to the role that would be difficult to replicate. While it’s possible that a new actor will take over the role, Rockstar may be better off if gamers are introduced to Tommy’s legacy rather than the man himself.
Tommy Vercetti’s legacy should play a big role in GTA 6 Vice City
Rather than players meeting Tommy Vercetti in person, GTA 6 could explore his lasting legacy in Vice City. If Tommy dies shortly before the start of GTA 6, it would open the door to a storyline in which players fight for control of a now leaderless criminal empire. While players wouldn’t get to meet Tommy in person, the legacy of his time as boss of Vice City would be impossible to ignore.
Exploring how Tommy’s old-fashioned criminal empire adapts to the modern world without him would provide a great foundation for the violent, twisty storyline that the GTA franchise has become known for. If this premise were to become central to the game’s story, rather than a side mission, players might even find themselves having to choose between working with the remnants of Tommy’s gang or with the young gangsters vying to replace them.
With GTA 6 returning to Vice City, it seems appropriate that Tommy Vercetti should be part of the story. Whether it’s by allowing players to meet him or simply dealing with his lasting impact on the city, Tommy deserves one last chance to shine.
