Exodus: In the New Game from the Former Developer of Mass Effect, the Decisions of Our Heroes Can Have an Impact Even “Decades” Later

New game from former Mass Effect developer features decisions that play out over “decades”. Exodus developers share new details about the upcoming RPG, including decisions players will have to make over an incredibly long time.

In the recently announced game Exodus, players will see how their decisions play out over decades. This innovative feature can provide a level of immersion never before seen in the genre.

Exodus is an upcoming sci-fi action-adventure RPG. The project is currently being developed by Archetype Entertainment, a new studio founded by former BioWare employees such as industry veterans James Ohlen and Drew Karpyshyn. Ohlen, best known as the lead designer on the first two Baldur’s Gate games, the original Knights of the Old Republic and Dragon Age: Origins, while Karpyshyn was the lead writer on Mass Effect 1 and 2. The connection of these two names to the project alone was enough to make fans of their previous works curious about how they are pushing the boundaries of the medium with Exodus.

Former developers BioWare will announce Exodus, an ambitious triple-A sci-fi RPG starring Matthew McConaughey, at The Game Awards 2023.
In a video Q&A with the game’s development team, Ohlen confirmed that Exodus will feature multiple endings, similar to Mass Effect, but that these endings will be affected by time dilation. This means that players will be able to make decisions that span years, decades, and centuries.

“Time dilation and how it affects your decisions is the essence of the game”.

Time dilation is essentially the difference between how time is perceived by one observer compared to another. It depends on their relative motion or the position of the gravitational field. This is why time is perceived differently in space than on Earth. So this fits in here as one of the core gameplay mechanics of Exodus, as the game is heavily focused on space travel, and the game’s tagline is even “Be the traveler”.

Obviously, Exodus draws inspiration from Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, which revolves around space travel and time dilation trippers. It will be interesting to see how such a mind-bending narrative concept translates into the medium of video games. Interstellar star Matthew McConaughey even took to the stage to announce the project at the 2023 Game Awards. McConaughey has also confirmed that he will star in Exodus, although it is not yet known what role he will play in the game.

There is currently no known release window for Exodus, and very few details are known about the game itself. However, with industry veterans at the helm, exemplary cinematic influence, and innovative game concept, Exodus has the potential to redefine the genre yet again.

Exodus is currently in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
