MOVIE NEWS – Game of Thrones creators have opened up about how The Last Jedi “annoyed” them while revealing details about their abandoned Star Wars project…

 

 

The creators of Game of Thrones, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, have finally opened up about their cancelled Star Wars movie trilogy, revealing how much one thing about Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi annoyed them.

Benioff and Weiss, known for their success with the HBO series Game of Thrones based on the books by George R.R. Martin, were said to have created a new Star Wars trilogy.

Filming is scheduled to begin in 2019. But in October of the same year, they announced that they would respectfully withdraw from the project. Now, the duo have come up with an explanation for why they cancelled their project and how it resembles The Last Jedi.

The Game of Thrones creators broke their silence during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. They covered how creative friction with Lucasfilm led to the cancellation of the film trilogy. “We wanted to do The First Jedi,” Benioff said. “Basically how the Jedi Order came to be, why it came to be, the first lightsaber…”. The duo had a specific story in mind, but Lucasfilm wasn’t interested. Weiss jokingly said they were annoyed when Johnson named his movie “The Last Jedi.”

“[…] We were annoyed as hell when [Johnson] called his movie The Last Jedi. He completely destroyed the obvious title for what we were working on.”

Johnson would also direct three new Star Wars films. However, a report claimed that Lucasfilm had scrapped the trilogy. While there have been reports that Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy has been cancelled, he and Kathleen Kennedy have consistently denied it over the years. Concerns about the state of the Star Wars films are not new.

Fans are now worried and confused because many movies have been announced since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, only to be cancelled or postponed.

Three Star Wars movies are slated for release in the coming years, plus a Mandalorian and a Grogu movie. As for Benioff and Weiss, the duo has a deal with Netflix for both the TV series and the movies. Reportedly worth $200 million. The contract was signed two months before the start of the Star Wars trilogy. Their upcoming project, 3 Body Problem, is also part of the agreement, which will premiere on March 21.

Game of Thrones is currently streaming on Max, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi is available on Disney Plus.
