Rian Johnson, Director of The Last Jedi, is Still Working on His Star Wars Trilogy

MOVIE NEWS – Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy is still in the works. He’s just busy at the moment.

The following sentence will either be good news or bad news for Star Wars fans, depending on which side of the sharp divide you fall on when it comes to 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Director Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy is still being made. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed to Vanity Fair that Rian Johnson, who of course directed the most divisive Star Wars film ever, is returning to the galaxy far, far away. Eventually.

“Rian’s been incredibly busy with the Tricked and the multi-movie deal with Netflix,” Kennedy said, while revealing that Lucasfilm is still planning Rian Johnson’s planned Star Wars trilogy.

While he may be busy, it’s safe to say the plan is still to bring Rian Johnson back for the sequel. As soon as he has some time. Star Wars: The Last Jedi, written and directed by Rian Johnson, is the second part of Disney’s sequel trilogy, in which Luke Skywalker’s peaceful and lonely life comes to an end when he meets Rey, a young woman who shows strong signs of the Force. Her desire to learn the ways of the Jedi forces Luke to make a decision that will change their lives forever. Meanwhile, Kylo Ren and General Hux, at the head of the First Order, launch an all-out assault on Leia and the Resistance for control of the galaxy.

The film is a big swing for the Star Wars franchise, subverting some expectations to defy fan theories and portraying the characters in a way that many didn’t expect. This has led to divisions among critics and audiences (the former with a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the latter with a 42% rating) and even within Star Wars fans. While some were impressed by the changes and direction Johnson took, others felt the film could be nothing more than the first sign of the apocalypse.

Following such divisive reactions, it was rumoured for some time that any further plans involving Rian Johnson had been scrapped. However, thanks to a new report, it sounds like this is far from the case, and instead the studio is simply waiting for the director to have some free time in his off-peak schedule.

Sadly, we have no idea at this point what Rian Johnson’s planned trilogy will contain, though many suspect it will be a sequel to Star Wars: Rise of the Skywalker, following the mysterious, Force-sensitive broom boy last seen in The Last Jedi.

Fortunately, Star Wars fans still have plenty to look forward to: the release of Obi-Wan Kenobi later this month, further seasons of the hit series The Mandalorian, various spinoffs including a series based around Ahsoka, and much more.

Director Rian Johnson is indeed extremely busy at the moment, with the filmmaker currently working on several sequels to the critically acclaimed crime thriller, The Ambush. The first sequel, Knives Out 2, is expected to land on Netflix later this year and will star an ensemble cast including Dave Bautista, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Kate Hudson, Madelyn Cline, Jessica Henwick and Ethan Hawke.
