It’s been more than three years since Riot began development on the long-rumored League of Legends MMO, but the work hasn’t progressed much and there’s still a lot of work to be done before the game is even released.
Originally, the team was led by Greg Street, the designer behind Age of Empires and World of Warcraft, but he has since left Riot to start his own studio and begin work on an MMO. But what about the League of Legends MMO? Riot has been quiet so far, but studio co-founder Merc Merrill posted some news on Twitter. It was both good and bad news. The good: they’re still working on the MMO. The bad: they rebooted it, so it’s still a long way from the finish line.
“After much thought and discussion, we decided some time ago to reset the direction of the project. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was necessary. The original vision simply wasn’t different enough from what you can play today. We don’t think you all want an MMO you’ve played before with a Runeterra coat of paint on it; to truly live up to Runeterra’s potential and meet the incredibly high expectations of players around the world, we need to do something that feels like a significant evolution of the genre. This is a huge challenge, but one that our team of deeply passionate MMO players and game development veterans are incredibly motivated to pursue,” Merrill wrote.
Fabrice Condominas (Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Star Wars: Squadrons) is the executive producer of the League of Legends MMO, and in his response he wrote that they still have a long way to go and are only at the first few miles of the marathon. Merrill also pointed out that they’re going to be quiet for a long time, so we’ll have to wait a few more years for the game.
Just don’t end up with another reboot.
