With the new fiscal year, the future of Sony’s gaming division could be set to change, with the American PlayStation company in particular now set to do things as usual.
Jim Ryan, the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, is essentially stepping down as of today, as he will no longer be in the role as of April 1. In fact, the 29th was his last day at Sony, and he announced his departure back in September. Ryan explained his departure by saying that he was tired of working in America while living in Europe (what if Sony Interactive Entertainment’s headquarters hadn’t been moved from Japan to America…?).
Ryan thanked Shuhei Yoshida for his compassionate and supportive leadership, then went on to say that he considers PlayStation to be a very special company and expressed his gratitude for his time at the company. His successor is Hiroki Totoki, at least temporarily, as the company has yet to announce who will actually take over as CEO (perhaps an announcement will come in the next quarterly report.) In December, Ryan was given a farewell party where he was presented with a PlayStation 5 modeled after the PS1. Considering he’s been with the company for more than three decades, it’s an understandable move, considering PlayStation launched in Japan in December 1994.
PlayStation Studios has a number of studios (e.g. Santa Monica Studios, Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, Sucker Punch…) that have created great games and IPs over the years and decades, although it should be remembered that development costs have increased enormously in the process. What can Sony and PlayStation expect after all this?
New details about the PlayStation 5 Pro (even though Sony has not announced it yet) are coming out almost every two days, and there are rumors that Sony is also working on a PlayStation handheld device that will probably be able to run games locally (rather than via Remote Play, as the PlayStation Portal does). Sony is using AMD technology for this (as with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series), and the project is said to be in the very early stages…
