“Maybe NieR, Maybe Not NieR” in Development with Key People from the Franchise

Yosuke Saito is working on a new project with Yoko Taro and Keiichi Okabe, but they are reluctant to say exactly what is in development under the supervision of the three Japanese developers.

Saito is a producer on NieR at Square Enix (where he is a senior executive) and told Weekly Famitsu that he and NieR (and former Drakengard) director Yoko Taro and soundtrack composer Keiichi Okabe (Monaca) have started a new project together. They spoke with Hiroyuki Kobayashi, former producer at Capcom who now runs the studio GPTRACK50 under the Chinese giant NetEase Games.

Saito said that he wanted to do something new with Yoko and Okabe for a long time. There will be something “put together” in the not too distant future, and he asked us to be patient. Maybe it will be a new part of NieR, maybe not, and then he chuckled and added that that was all he could tell us about this concept. Meanwhile, he has some ideas for something that doesn’t exist yet, and he can’t devote all his time to it. So he has mainly left that task to the crew, but Saito thinks that something very interesting is starting to emerge. He can’t wait to see what happens with this other project.

Perhaps it’s already obvious that Square Enix’s strategy has changed (we’ve reported on this before), and now the Japanese company is in a bit of a panic after their share price dropped 15% in one day (we’ve reported on this as well). Square Enix wants to make fewer but better games, and with NieR: Automata being a huge success, it was only a matter of time before Yoko Taro and the others were rounded up to make a new installment. If Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth haven’t met their sales targets so far, maybe they should look at other IPs.

Maybe NieR will help them. Or maybe not.
