Could Ico Get a Film Adaptation?

MOVIE NEWS – Sony and PlayStation Productions have reportedly received an offer to make a transmedia adaptation of Fumito Ueda’s game.

On the Easy Allies podcast, Michael Huber claims that a friend has submitted a draft of Ico to Sony, as an adaptation of the game is on the company’s list of things to do. It could be made into a movie or a TV show. It is not known whether it would be a live-action or an animated adaptation, and it does not mean that the concept will be realized, because as with games, in the movie industry there can be a lot of concepts that companies receive, many of which do not make it to the finish line.

For Ueda, Ico was only the third game in his career, having previously worked as an animator on D (Japanese name: D no Shokutaku: Director’s Cut) and then working with Kenji Eno (who also directed D) on the CGI scenes for Enemy Zero. (This game was already SEGA Saturn-exclusive after Eno got so upset about the low production run of the PS1 port of D that he became SEGA-exclusive from then on, but that’s another story…)

Ueda’s first game, which he also directed and designed, was Ico for the PS2 in 2001. That game was a huge success, so it’s no surprise that Sony later asked him to make another game; it was Shadow of the Colossus, released in 2005, which (along with Ico) was remastered for PS3 and later remade for PS4 (in the case of the latter). The Last Guardian has already been through development hell, having been announced for PS3 in 2009 but not released on PlayStation 4 until 2016.

As for Ico, it’s a little hard to imagine what kind of adaptation it could be, but if something comes of it, we can only be happy, because Ueda’s work shouldn’t be overlooked, because even if they are hard to sell games at first, they have a great impact on the audience if they stick with it.
