A longer version of the ending of CD Projekt RED’s (CDPR) game has surfaced, and it’s a major twist to what’s been going on so far!

Surprisingly, what the Polish developers originally planned for the end of Geralt’s story has remained a secret for nine years (!!!). XLetalis and Glassfish (the latter worked on the Brothers in Arms mod) have revealed what the full ending of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt looks like. One of the characters would have essentially committed treason, and we learned this thanks to the REDkit toolkit made available by CDPR, so that modders could not only access the files, but also reimplement them into the game in debug mode.

In the ending we know so far, Geralt defeats Eredin and it was revealed that Avallac’h took Ciri to the Tower of Undvik to defeat the White Frost. After that, no matter which ending is chosen, the fate of the Lodge of Sorceresses was not further explained. The cutscene, however, would have taken place after Geralt has defeated Eredin, but would have appeared before the tower scene. There are no significant changes in these two scenes in the cut version.

In the extended ending (it’s strange to have to use this term again after Mass Effect 3…), Geralt is unconscious for a few days after the battle of Undvik. He wakes up in one of the medical tents of Nilfgaard and the two doctors of the emperor argue about his chances of survival. Geralt searches for Yennefer, they discover that Ciri is nowhere to be found and suspect Avallac’h of being a traitor. The cut out part could have contained up to 20 minutes (!) of dialog and exploration, and Geralt could have visited Triss, talked to some soldiers serving Nilfgaard, or even seen Hjalmar, Cerys, or Jarl Donar an Hindar asking for Crach an Craite’s body. This would have decided who would be king of Skellige (Cerys, Hjalmar, or Svanrige).

The big twist would have been when Yennefer was taken to the rest of the Lodge to find out Ciri’s whereabouts. Some of the animation is missing, so we don’t know exactly what happens, but it seems that Yennefer sabotages events so that Phiippa, Fringilla, and Margarita are captured by the Nilfgaardians and then executed. So Yennefer would have betrayed the sorceresses and given Triss a special spell to escape. There is a lot of variation here because of Geralt’s previous decisions, his relationship to his partner, and there is also variation if we judge Yennefer’s actions positively or negatively. But the betrayal underlines that Yennefer would do anything for Ciri. It is an extreme step to keep the Lodge from interfering in Ciri’s life and exploiting her.

The scene is almost complete, with full dialogue and granular reactions from the characters…
