The Japanese publisher has reportedly teamed up with another major company to bring its decade-old MMO to iOS and Android.
A leaker, Kurakasis, claims that Final Fantasy XIV Mobile is in development and will be the result of a strategic agreement made about six years ago. In fact, Square Enix used to work with Tencent, and that’s what the press release said at the time: “The Square Enix Group will accelerate these business development efforts to expand its content services worldwide through this strategic alliance with the Tencent Group. The results of this newly created alliance will include the establishment of a joint venture company, the co-development of AAA titles based on new intellectual properties, the licensing of existing intellectual properties, and more.”
So far, nothing has come of the Square Enix-Tencent deal. In December last year, an unannounced mobile Nier game was canceled (as reported by Reuters at the time) because the developers couldn’t find a monetization model that suited the big-budget project! Hopefully this won’t happen with Final Fantasy XIV, but a full port might be even more challenging as the game needs to be prepaid, and this model is not very common in the mobile market…
Speaking of Final Fantasy XIV, it recently received its latest addition, Dawntrail, which brings the last decade of story to an end as players can travel to a new continent, Tural. This region is inspired by Southeast Asia and Latin America. The reception is not very impressive: only about 2/3 of the reviews on Steam are positive. Nevertheless, the game’s producer Naoki Yoshida (aka Yoshi-P) has announced that Dawntrail has brought Square Enix a number of players not seen since the 2013 reboot Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.
There’s a better chance that Final Fantasy XIV will be available on Nintendo’s next-gen platform, but that would take some time as the Xbox didn’t get the MMO in a flash.
