“Well, if you think about ‘what is fire?’ Fire can represent hatred, violence, and possible misuse of power. There’s a lot of thematic stuff: In my mind, in this film, it represents the aftermath of all of that energy, which is grief and having to live with what you’ve done.”

The new title, and now Cameron’s insight, confirms that Avatar 3 will focus on the conflict between the Sully family and the water tribe, the Metkayina, as well as the fire tribe. The leader of the latter will be played by Game of Thrones and Tabu star Oona Chaplin, whose name has now been revealed to be Varang. And the concept drawings presented at D23 show for the first time the violent ruler of the “ash people” inhabited by volcanoes.
