An interesting rumor was floating around, but since then the post has curiously disappeared from Reddit, but it’s worth checking out what it could be about.
The story of Thief is a sad one. The last time we saw the franchise was in 2014, when Thief was released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in February 2014, ten and a half years ago, developed by Eidos Montreal and published by Square Enix. Garrett did not receive a very good reception. While the game’s stealth mechanics and replayability were positive elements, it was not particularly well received.
The franchise broke a ten-year silence with the reboot. Before that, Thief: Deadly Shadows had been released by Ion Storm in May 2004, but the Unreal Engine 2 game (2014’s Thief: Deadly Shadows was on UE3) was only released for PC and Xbox at the time. It wasn’t bad, in fact it got quite good reviews from the press at the time. In particular, one of the maps in it, Robbing the Cradle, which was a bit of a foray into the survival horror genre, is still memorable to this day. However, it did not sell as well as expected and publisher Eidos has stopped development on the fourth installment, Thief 4: Dagger of Ways…
According to a now-deleted rumor on Reddit, a remaster of 2014’s Thief, subtitled Master Thief, may be in the works, but frankly, we don’t see much reason for this, as the franchise was already dead in 2014, and this was a poor attempt at resurrection. (There are examples today: the trio of Electronic Arts, Motive and Dead Space Remake).
The rumor is unofficial and probably had little truth to it. Eidos Montreal’s remake of Deus Ex: Human Revolution would make more sense, as the game, originally released on PS3 and X360, would be easy to port over.
