It only took two days for the developer mode of Baldur’s Gate 3’s modding tools to open, so the creativity that has been going on for over a year in Larian’s game may be about to get even bigger.
Baldur’s Gate 3 received its 7th patch over the weekend, bringing the official modding toolbar and mod browser to the game. A modder named Siegfire uploaded the modified toolkit (on Nexus Mods), which opened up several features that were originally closed. A full-featured level editor is now available in the package, so who knows what great and fantastic maps will be coming to Baldur’s Gate 3 in the future. Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian, has said in vain that the studio is in the game development business and not in the tools business, but the tools already offer a lot of freedom by default, not to mention Siegfire…
The situation with the game is more complicated because it needs to be supported on consoles, and for that it needs to go through the Sony and Microsoft certification process. The official tools only allow you to modify classes, items, balance or new NPCs in the Baldur’s Gate 3 campaign. The mod also allows you to edit maps and savegames. Larian has essentially released a slightly modified (dumbed down) Divinity Engine 4.0 editor.
With the mod, you can add new locations to the Baldur’s Gate 3 campaign, or even modules and stories. The Red War College, Candlekeep and the second Moonrise Tower have also been removed from the game for quality and pacing reasons, so there is indeed something to add to Larian’s game. This mod is similar to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’s M4-78 restoration mod, as KotOR 2 cut a lot of story relevant content and restored a whole planet that had been cut late in the game.
So Baldur’s Gate 3 mods could become even more powerful in the future…
