A Dragon Age veteran reveals why BioWare never matched Baldur’s Gate 3’s approach
Numerous studios and developers have praised Larian Studios for their handling of Baldur’s Gate 3, from its early access phase to its continued high-quality updates a year after its official launch. Among these voices is Arryn Flynn, the director of Nightingale and a veteran of Dragon Age, who highlighted the fantasy RPG, the winner of the 2023 Game of the Year award, as an example.
Flynn told Gamesradar in an interview that connecting with players through early access, as he did with Nightingale, is hugely beneficial—something he couldn’t achieve at BioWare when he worked on Dragon Age or Mass Effect. “The main frustration is just the pace at which the industry evolves. Nightingale offers many live updates,” he said.
“We’re gaining so much from engaging with players through this process, which was much harder at BioWare. Creating a story-first game raises the question of how to evolve the narrative without messing it up. It’s a tough problem to solve,” he explained, before praising Baldur’s Gate 3 for doing an “incredible job” with narrative delivery during and after its two-year Early Access period.
The Difference Between BioWare and Larian Studios
The former Mass Effect director has many reasons not to return to BioWare, especially due to ongoing issues with EA. Even so, he finds it frustrating that other studios have so much success in building deep connections with their players and learning from them—something that just didn’t happen at his former studio. “It just wasn’t something we did at BioWare.”
