Can a Failed PlayStation 4 Game Get a Remaster?

We recently heard that a game released on the PREVIOUS generation of consoles might be getting a remaster, and now we’re hearing the same thing about another title from a similar era…

The other day, Jeff Grubb mentioned that a remaster of a smaller game might be announced during State of Play. He didn’t say which title, but VGC editor Jordan Middler brought up the fact that John Garvin (who recently criticized Astro Bot for how demeaning he thought it was to guest star in his game, and we wrote about it), the director of Days Gone, would “lose his mind” if he found out what was in the works.

Garvin has been critical of Sony ever since he left Bend Studios, the development team behind Days Gone, because the company wouldn’t give the green light for a sequel even though it had nothing to be ashamed of in terms of reception and sales. Sony’s reasoning at the time was that Days Gone was not a blockbuster, so Bend Studio is now working on a new IP instead of a sequel. This will have a multiplayer element and will also incorporate some of Days Gone’s open world systems.

Days Gone was released on PlayStation 4 in April 2019, and later received a PC port. On the PlayStation 5, you can already play Bend Studio’s game at a 60 FPS frame rate, so it would be a bit redundant to remaster it. But there is another remaster in the works: the US ratings board, the ESRB, leaked Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and it was also released on PlayStation 4 (albeit a little earlier). These remasters don’t make much sense.

Sony has been working on this remaster since The Last of Us (the game released at the end of its PS3 life jumped to PlayStation 4 shortly after, followed by the PlayStation 5 remake…), and maybe this shows that they must be in a lot of financial trouble. But it’s not official yet!
