Game of Thrones and X-Men Actress to Play Lara Croft in Amazon Reboot?!

MOVIE NEWS – Amazon MGM Studios is still looking for the right actor to play Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider adaptation…

Amazon MGM Studios and Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge are actively working on a Tomb Raider adaptation for Prime Video. It looks like there’s a lot of competition going on to play Lara Croft.

According to Deadline, the showrunners have compiled a shortlist of young actors suitable for the role of Croft. Moreover, some of them have already participated in the test recordings. Sophie Turner, best known for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones and as Jean Gray in the X-Men prequels, is one of these candidates. The other is Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody). According to the report, Emma Corrin (The Crown) and Mackenzie Davis (Blade Runner 2049) are also in the works, but they have not yet been tested.

The next Lara Croft

Angelina Jolie previously portrayed Lara Croft in the first two Tomb Raider films, and Alicia Vikander in the 2018 reboot. Neither film was positively received by critics, but Jolie’s debut in the role holds the record for the highest-grossing video game adaptation when adjusted for inflation.

Waller-Bridge was very happy to be given the opportunity to make the series: “If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode. Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure.”

Tomb Raider has seen a bit of a resurgence this year with the announcement of Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider and the release of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, an animated series set after the events of Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The series received mostly positive reviews and was renewed for a second season.

Crystal Dynamics is currently working on a Tomb Raider project dubbed Tomb Raider Next. We haven’t heard much about the game, but Crystal Dynamics laid off several workers late last year as part of parent company Embracer Group’s cost-cutting measures.

Would they be a wrong choice?

Despite the makers’ enthusiasm, the internet seems to disagree, as the general reaction to the casting decisions isn’t exactly positive. In DiscussingFilm’s Twitter post discussing the casting decisions, it’s actually pretty hard to find a single positive reaction to the casting rumour.

“Fire whoever is in charge of casting immediately,” replied @MattBarclay20.

“Both are absolutely terrible choices I’m sorry…” – said user @DeadmanBostonB, “I hope they see this, PLEASE BACK OUT I BEG YOU”

The fact is, the internet rarely reacts positively to anything these days, but the consensus seems pretty unanimous on this issue. However, Amazon is likely paying close attention to fan reaction, and they still have plenty of time to consider other actors for the title role.
