Recently, Larian Studios announced Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, which will include photo mode, cross-play, and a bunch of new character subclasses…
Larian Studios has confirmed that Patch 8 (which introduces photo mode and cross-play) will be the last “major” update for Baldur’s Gate 3. We’ll believe it when we see it…
While there are some BG3 fans who don’t like that a predominantly single-player game has received so many patches and updates since its release last year, it makes sense, considering it was an Early Access release. Most were happy with the consistent fixes, but it looks like the fun will end next year.
A few days ago, Larian announced Patch 8 for Baldur’s Gate 3, which looks like it’s going to be a real big bang. Not only does it finally make cross-play available, but it also brings photo mode and 12 new subclasses, making it one of the biggest patches BG3 has received since its release last year. And it looks like it might be the last.
These long-awaited D&D subclasses offer new ways to enjoy the base game, as well as modding and multiclassing. (See the Steam link at the end of the article for a full list of new classes coming in BG3 Patch 8 next year):
- “College of Glamour” Bard
- “Path of Giants” Barbarian
- “Death Domain” Cleric
- “Circle of Stars” Druid
- “Oath of the Crown” Paladin
- “Arcane Archer” Fighter
- “Drunken Master” Monk
- “Swarmkeeper” Ranger
- “Swashbuckler” Rogue
- “Shadow Magic” Sorcerer
- “Hexblade” Warlock
- “Blade Singing” Wizard
Patch 8 will be Baldur’s Gate 3’s last “Major Patch”
As pointed out by Redditor HatingGeoffry on the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit initially reported by VideoGamer, Larian’s blog post announcing Patch 8 had an exciting note that went under the radar, thanks to the distraction of the announced updates. Interestingly, they specifically refer to Patch 8 as “another major patch.”
Larian says that they are saying Faerun “adieu in search of stranger shores,” which is likely a reference to the studio’s other projects that are currently in development. This, along with the fact that Larian literally says that this is the last “major” patch for Baldur’s Gate 3, suggests that the team is ready to move on and won’t be returning for a sequel.
While this seems pretty obvious, it’s worth noting that Larian will likely continue to patch and update BG3 after Patch 8. Just not at the same level as they have been in recent times. We can expect bug fixes and minor tweaks. Especially if Patch 8 causes any unforeseen issues.
That said, there are some fans who doubt that Larian is really giving up on BG3 with the upcoming patch. While the studio has never previously said it would stop updating, we were all surprised by how much they’ve added to the game since its release. Given that, it wouldn’t be surprising if Baldur’s Gate 3 also gets the “Stardew Valley treatment” in another surprise update…
