AMD and Intel Merger? AMD’s CEO Responds!

TECH NEWS – Dr. Lisa Su also talked about how optimistic she is about the state of the company’s AI business.

Under the CEO, “the Reds” have made a huge turnaround and are now a major player in both the semiconductor and artificial intelligence markets. It is no coincidence that Time magazine named her the CEO of 2024. In an interview with the publication, she talked about chips and the AI market, and how AMD will build on the market hype to turn a profit. Lisa Su believes that AI is one of the most important technologies of her career because it has the power to change the way we see the world, and although it has only been a major technology for a few years, it will grow exponentially in the coming years.

She is referring to how the capacity of the technology and the potential of AI seemed impossible just a few quarters ago, and yet where AI has improved in comparison. From generative (content-creating) AI to the capability of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), there has been significant progress as all the mainstream tech companies focus on the technology, either with breakthroughs in logic or improvements in computation.

She then discussed the situation at Intel. There, Pat Gelsinger is no longer CEO and has been suddenly replaced. Lisa Su says it’s a tough job and she respects Gelsinger. But she rejects the idea of AMD merging with Intel because there are rumors of such a merger; she said that the soon to be outgoing Biden administration has no such intentions.

In any case, AMD has really been able to pick up the pace in recent years. First with Ryzen processors, it showed a decent track record, then it was able to get into AI accelerators, and we can talk about the hardware seen in handheld PCs. Hopefully by 2025, the RX 8000 series will also show a decent performance in graphics cards.
