Square Enix will take players back to Highwind after Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, presumably 30 years after the original PS1 release.
Since Final Fantasy VII Remake was released in 2020 and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in 2024, it’s realistic to expect a third installment of the project in 2027, which the Japanese company will be working on at full speed before the PC port of the second episode hits screens in January. Recently, Game Rant caught up with Yoshinori Kitase and Naoki Hamaguchi, the producer and director of the Final Fantasy VII remake project, at The Game Awards, and they talked not only about the PC port of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but also about what comes after.
“We’re hoping that with the release of the PC version, we can gain momentum and continue that momentum through the end of the trilogy. We’re hoping that we can carry the feelings that players have had all the way through to the end,” Kitase said. In any case, the ending of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is massive, but it’s a cliffhanger because it leaves the audience wanting more. Momentum is also important to Square Enix: Final Fantasy VII Remake established the world and story of the game, while Rebirth expanded the world with open-world elements.
By definition, the next step in the evolution will be to wrap up the story and expand on the open world focus seen in Rebirth. To that end, the overall world should be much more vibrant than its predecessor. Tetsuya Nomura, the creative director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, has already stated that balloon travel will return. This was confirmed by Hamaguchi: “We hope that players have seen the evolution of Final Fantasy 7, with the remake being more story-driven, and then Rebirth having that kind of open field where you can move around freely. Then we’re interested in making the Highwind, so hopefully in the third title, it will allow for an even more expansive map and players will be able to experience that.”
Hopefully, the third part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake project will be released in 2027.
