“We made mistakes.” Helldivers 2’s developers admit 2024 wasn’t perfect, but they’ve learned valuable lessons and look to the future with confidence. Arrowhead Game Studios is improving its processes to better meet the expectations of its fans.
Arrowhead Game Studios has undoubtedly been one of the standout developers of 2024. With Helldivers 2, they achieved massive success, navigated the PSN account controversy, lost and regained fan trust, and are now back in the spotlight with a well-received update. After everything that’s unfolded over the past year, what’s next for 2025? While they haven’t revealed details about their sci-fi shooter’s future, the team is determined to learn from their failures and deliver a game their players will love.
Michael Eriksson, the director of Helldivers 2, spoke about these challenges in an interview with GamesRadar+. Eriksson admitted the team feels far more prepared now: “We feel a lot more confident than when we launched the game,” he said. “I don’t think it’s a secret that we weren’t prepared for this, for the amount of attention and success. […] Internally, some processes weren’t working as well as they should have. We lacked key people in certain areas, because when you have a hit that big, it’s a beast to control. During that post-launch period, we made mistakes simply because of the chaos.”
“But we’ve made a lot of progress in managing this beast, and our processes for testing updates before release are much better now. I think we’ve improved a lot when it comes to precision in releases,” Eriksson continued. However, he also acknowledged that failure is still possible: “That being said, when you’re building a game alongside the community, sometimes things won’t turn out exactly as you hoped. And when I say fail, I mean we might not hit the results we’re aiming for. That’s where our players come in—they tell us what they want, what they like, and what they don’t like.”
Eriksson emphasized the importance of player feedback: “It’s incredibly helpful for us. Hopefully, the road ahead will be smoother, but we’re still prepared to take risks to deliver everything the players want.”
