Both Horizon Forbidden West and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered showcased the power of game developer Guerrilla Games’ scaling technology.
Digital Foundry analyzed two of Guerrilla Games’ games on PlayStation 5 Pro, comparing the Dutch studio’s solution to Nvidia’s DLSS upscaler and AMD’s FSR 3. In all three cases, the games were upscaled from 1440p native resolution to 4K.Guerrilla’s solution handles several visual elements better than DLSS, including reflections on water surfaces and motion.Compared to AMD’s FSR 3, Guerrilla Games shows much better results on the PlayStation 5 Pro, as AMD’s solution makes the grass look washed out and everything look softer, even when standing still.
With that in mind, it’s understandable that Guerrilla Games skipped PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), leaving one of the PlayStation 5 Pro’s innovations unused by a key team at PlayStation Studios.PSSR hasn’t always produced acceptable results in games (such as Alan Wake 2, which we covered yesterday), and the technology can only produce beautiful visuals when the native resolution is high enough.
Since Guerrilla Games has developed its own technology for future games, these two titles are a kind of test on their part, and since the result is great, we’ll be curious to see how they can keep up with PSSR in the future, which will surely improve (especially on PlayStation 6, where technology could be one of the most important elements).Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and Horizon Forbidden West will also support the PlayStation 5 Pro, which is not surprising since they are both internally developed, first-party titles, and given that they are almost obligated to support a half-generation update. (We wonder if the PS5 launch titles will all support it?)
