Insomniac Games’ game will get an expansion, but the story is not that simple, so let’s summarize in more detail how Spider-Man will get such an expansion…
Insomniac Games was hit by a ransomware attack last year. We’ve been following this closely, and if memory serves, we’ve already heard that Sony’s studio might be working on some sort of multiplayer concept for Marvel’s Spider-Man in the future. But that’s not what we’re talking about here, and neither is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which hasn’t even received any DLC yet. So there was talk of a multiplayer project where you could control multiple Spider-Men in a cooperative concept… it was supposed to be called Spider-Man: The Great Web, but who knows if it will happen.
But fans were tired of Insomniac Games’ single-player game. In the video embedded below, you can see that a group of fans have decided to get to work on an expansion for Marvel’s Spider-Man. It’s simply called Spider-Man Multiplayer and the concept is similar to Gotham Knights, but of course you don’t control characters from the DC Comic Universe, but multiple Spider-Men. The project is being worked on by tiffsomniac, but not alone, as there is a larger team behind it, making the multiplayer concept more ambitious, with no release date yet.
In the first video you can see what gameplay ideas are in the pipeline. This one focuses on fighting and moving around New York with your friends. Besides Peter Parker you can see Silk, Miguel O’Hara (Spider-Punk) and many other skins. Some are based on the skins we’ve seen so far, others are mods. We don’t know much about them yet, but maybe that’s okay because it’s better not to tell you everything right away to keep people interested.
So Spider-Man multiplayer is in the works, and it could be what Insomniac Games didn’t do. But it won’t end with Sony and Insomniac shutting down development because of copyright claims?
