Resident Evil Returns to Its Horror Roots with a New Film Adaptation

MOVIE NEWS – The iconic Resident Evil franchise is set to return to the big screen with a fresh reboot co-produced by PlayStation Productions and directed by Zach Cregger, the mastermind behind Barbarian. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this ambitious project promises a more faithful adaptation of the beloved video games.

The Resident Evil movie adaptations have always been a mixed bag, and the Netflix series did little to improve their reputation. While the Milla Jovovich-led series was a box office hit for years, it left many gamers disappointed due to its loose connection to Capcom’s games and its diluted horror essence. However, it seems that a new cinematic reboot is on the horizon.

An Ambitious New Reboot

A new Resident Evil reboot is currently in development, and it seems to be shaping up as a highly ambitious project. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that four major studios are competing fiercely for the rights to this new film, which will be written and directed by Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind Barbarian. Cregger describes the project as “a reboot that will bring the franchise back to its horror roots and stay true to the original games.”

The movie will be produced by Constantin Film alongside PlayStation Productions, ensuring a stronger focus on the video game origins. Warner Bros. and Netflix are two of the frontrunners vying for the rights, with Warner Bros. reportedly having an edge due to its successful bid for Weapons, another film directed by Zach Cregger. This further cements Cregger’s reputation as one of the most promising directors in modern horror cinema.

What About the Resident Evil Games?

While Capcom has remained silent on the matter, they’ve previously confirmed that more Resident Evil remakes are in the pipeline. Recent reports suggest that remakes of Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica are next in line. In the short term, however, Capcom’s primary focus is on perfecting Monster Hunter Wilds, scheduled for release on February 28, 2025. Shortly after, we might see new announcements related to Resident Evil, the survival horror franchise that has brought Capcom immense success.
