FromSoftware’s Surprise – The Duskbloods Was Originally Meant for the First Switch

Hidetaka Miyazaki has revealed that FromSoftware’s new title, The Duskbloods, wasn’t initially developed with the Switch 2 in mind. In fact, the project started years ago for the first-generation Nintendo Switch, and the studio insists it won’t abandon its beloved single-player experiences.

FromSoftware’s appearance at this year’s Nintendo Direct was as unexpected as it was exciting. The Japanese studio surprised fans by announcing The Duskbloods, a gothic-themed PvPvE multiplayer title coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch 2. But according to Miyazaki, the project had been in the works long before this reveal—and it originally targeted the first Nintendo Switch.

In an interview published on Nintendo’s official website, Hidetaka Miyazaki—known for directing Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring—explained the origins of the game. “Some time ago, we had the chance to meet with Nintendo to exchange ideas. During this meeting, we pitched the initial concept of The Duskbloods,” he recalled. “It was very rudimentary back then—more like a loose collection of thoughts than a real proposal. But Nintendo was intrigued by the unique tone, and that’s how the project got started.”

Initially, a small team began working on the game for the original Switch, but as development progressed, Nintendo approached FromSoftware about the next-gen Switch. “We had to rework our entire process to take advantage of the Switch 2’s capabilities. Its emphasis on online features helped us stay true to our initial vision,” Miyazaki noted.

FromSoftware Still Committed to Single-Player Games

Some fans have expressed concern that FromSoftware is moving away from its iconic solo experiences in favor of multiplayer. With The Duskbloods and Elden Ring: Nighreign in the pipeline, questions about the studio’s future direction are natural.

But Miyazaki provided reassurance: “We are still actively developing single-player focused titles,” he said. So while the studio expands into new formats, it hasn’t forgotten the challenging, immersive solo adventures that put it on the map.
