There’s been one persistent myth about the development of Expedition 33, and the RPG’s director has decided to put an end to it: while Sandfall Interactive has been labeled a team of “Ubisoft refugees,” only three members actually came from the company.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been getting a lot of attention lately – and rightly so. Created by the French studio Sandfall Interactive, a team of just over thirty people, the game has become a critical and commercial success, managing to stand out in a crowded and demanding RPG market. But with success often comes misinformation, and in recent weeks, the studio has been battling a handful of rumors – which its director was eager to clarify.
As it turns out, the core team behind the game consists of only 34 individuals, including creative director Guillaume Broche and even the studio dog – who’s apparently essential to morale. Though they also work with external partners for voice acting, localization, and motion capture, the main development team is surprisingly small and tight-knit.
Given that Broche and Tom Guillermin – the studio’s founders – both previously worked at Ubisoft, the entire team was quickly labeled as ex-Ubisoft developers. But in an interview with The Washington Post, Broche made it clear: “Only three members of the team are from Ubisoft”. That’s less than 10%. Most of the developers are young newcomers with no prior experience in the gaming industry.
No DLC is in development or planned for Expedition 33
What about post-launch content? While Sandfall Interactive has acknowledged that selling over two million units in under a month opens the door to DLC possibilities, there is currently no downloadable content in development or even on the table. Broche clarified that a fan response he gave was merely a hypothetical and shouldn’t be considered confirmation. “There’s a lot of joy and sincerity in how we built this game, and I think players can feel it. We put our heart and soul into it,” he said.
