The Star of Werwulf Wants a Close Bond

MOVIE NEWS – Aaron Taylor-Johnson wants to build a close and lasting working relationship with director Robert Eggers. The 35-year-old actor had an important role in their film Nosferatu, and he is the lead in the filmmaker’s latest gothic horror, Werwulf.

Taylor-Johnson would like to follow in the footsteps of famous director-actor pairings such as the Martin Scorsese – Leonardo DiCaprio duo. In an interview with Collider, the actor said he considers it an honor when a former director approaches him again, as it shows people enjoy working with him.

“I envy the great director-actor combos, in fact, I’m jealous of them,” he revealed. “I think, I wish I had films together like Scorsese and Leo, or Scorsese and De Niro.”

Taylor-Johnson is not merely envious of the above pairings, but also deeply respects the David Fincher – Brad Pitt creative duo and watches Christopher Nolan and his regular team with close attention. He knows that the foundation of fruitful collaboration is a shared professional language that develops over time between director and actor as they work together. With Eggers, they are already making quite good progress, he added with a laugh.

The plot of Werwulf is set in 13th-century England. In the foggy countryside, a mysterious and cruel creature begins to decimate the population – the horror stories of local superstitions suddenly become reality.

According to Eggers, this is his darkest and most oppressive screenplay to date. In his usual manner, the director paid meticulous attention to historical accuracy. The actors, for example, speak in original Old English, which required the film to be subtitled. Alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the main roles feature more of Eggers’ favorites: Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson.
