If the new style doesn’t suit the first-person action roguelike, it’s still possible to use the old one, so everyone wins with this update…
Mortal Sin recently received a surprising new update. With it came a graphical overhaul that makes the pulp comic style even more impressive. But fans of the original need not worry: you can always switch between the original palette and the new visuals. The overall visual tone of Mortal Sin is a mix of prog metal album art and sword-and-sorcery comics. It’s like seeing Conan the Barbarian running through a slightly hipster Dark Horse comic adaptation.
At launch, the game had a strict and striking visual style with a deliberately limited color palette, using bright red, deep blue, and shades of gray to black. The new rendering maintains the gritty tone and bold linework but introduces much more color to the world. The “Realistic Visuals Update” fits perfectly with the spirit of Mortal Sin, but it almost feels like a completely new game—though that’s definitely not the case.
Nikola Todorovic’s game was released on Steam Early Access on March 15, 2023, and remains in early access. It features brutal yet satisfying melee combat that pairs well with the game’s distinctive visuals. Think Condemned or Warhammer 40K: Vermintide for the brutality, and among dungeon crawlers, Lunacid would be a close comparison.
Mortal Sin’s track record speaks for itself: despite being in early access for two years, it boasts 3004 reviews, with an overwhelmingly positive rating—96% of them are positive. Even the most recent 167 reviews are very positive, with 93% of users giving it a thumbs-up.
We still don’t know when Mortal Sin will be officially released, but what’s clear is that the developer is steadily expanding the game, and the community appreciates the effort.
