Western tales return to the big screen
At a time when Westerns have mostly found success on television, The Unholy Trinity joins projects like Kevin Costner’s Horizon saga in bringing the genre back to movie theaters. It’s reassuring to see that these period Westerns still have a place in cinema today. With its impressive cast and gritty tale, The Unholy Trinity promises to be a compelling new chapter in Western storytelling. Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
A tale of revenge, hidden secrets, and lost treasures, the film is set in the rugged Montana frontier of the 1870s. As the story begins, Isaac Broadway faces his final moments before execution and tasks his estranged son, Henry, with a harrowing mission: kill the man who falsely accused him. Determined to see his father’s name cleared, Henry travels to the isolated town of Trinity, only to become ensnared between the steadfast new sheriff, Gabriel Dove, and the enigmatic St. Christopher.
The director teases a mix of tradition and originality
True to its title, The Unholy Trinity focuses on three characters driven by distinct goals. In an interview with Variety, Australian filmmaker Richard Gray discussed the film’s dynamic characters, highlighting Pierce Brosnan’s portrayal of Sheriff Gabriel Dove and Samuel L. Jackson’s mysterious St. Christopher. “Sam plays a master manipulator, while Pierce’s character is a sheriff who fled Ireland during the famine, but the town sees him as too soft. Both roles are filled with clever dialogue, and it’s great to have that lighter tone amid the action and vengeance.”
“It’s a traditional Western in many ways, but also refreshingly original. Samuel L. Jackson plays a former slave returning to reclaim gold stolen from him. Pierce’s sheriff is trying to end the cycle of revenge, but the town is deeply divided after the war, and the tension is palpable.”
