But you can still play offline, at least if you’ve played recently. So, Warner’s Super Smash Bros. clone isn’t completely lost.
MultiVersus’ online servers officially closed on May 30, bringing an end to Warner Bros. Games’ Smash Bros. rival crossover game. Back in January, the publisher announced that the game’s fifth season, which ran from February 5 to May 30, would be its last. At 6 p.m. Hungarian time on Friday night, the game disappeared from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. Players who logged in at any time since February 4 will be able to continue playing the game offline.
According to Warner, a local save file will be automatically created and linked to your PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store account once you log in. This allows you to continue enjoying the game offline with all acquired and purchased content. Microtransactions have been unavailable since the game’s closure announcement, but players with remaining Gleamium currency and character tokens can continue to spend them on in-game content until the game goes offline. Players will not be refunded for Gleamium or other content purchased with real money.
“This decision was not made lightly. All of us on the Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games teams have poured our hearts and souls into MultiVersus, creating a unique social and cooperative experience from scratch that brings together a variety of popular characters and worlds. We are very proud of the game we have built and are incredibly thankful for the support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey. Your passion and enthusiasm have been unmatched,” reads the game’s FAQ page.
Players have continued to express concern about the game’s closure. Some have complained that the Founder’s Packs, especially the $100 Premium Founder’s Pack, originally contained character unlock tokens when they were released in 2022. However, the game is ending before enough characters have been introduced to use all the tokens.
Incidentally, this is the second time MultiVersus has been shut down. The game was a huge success when it launched in July 2022, reaching 153,433 concurrent players on Steam at its peak. However, the player base quickly dwindled, and the game closed for almost a year before returning at the end of May last year with 114,000 concurrent players. Unfortunately, that number has also dropped.
