TECH NEWS – Nvidia isn’t the only one tightening the specs; AMD is also releasing cards with just 8 GB of VRAM.
We’ve already covered how AMD stubbornly continues to offer 8 GB of VRAM on its Radeon RX 9060 XT, which is available in two variants: one with 16 GB and another with only 8 GB. Nvidia has taken a similar route with its GeForce RTX 5060 Ti, where the higher 16 GB version is, unsurprisingly, in higher demand. The GeForce RTX 5060 and 5050 models are also limited to 8 GB, and the weaker card even comes with older GDDR6X memory instead of GDDR7.
As game requirements rise, so does the demand for VRAM. Many consider 16 GB to be the new standard for a *“smooth AAA gaming experience.”* But Nvidia and AMD seem indifferent to this shift, and gamers have voiced strong criticism against 8 GB cards. They simply can’t deliver acceptable performance for modern titles. Still, AMD has stood by this decision since day one, and reports suggest there is still market interest in the 8 GB version, even though it’s only $50 cheaper than its 16 GB counterpart.
The Name Game and Price Gaps Raise Eyebrows
In an interview with a Taiwanese publication, Frank Azor argued that the $50 gap between the two RX 9060 XT versions may seem small but actually accounts for 15% of the GPU’s MSRP — a significant difference. Beyond memory capacity, the bigger issue is branding: users find it misleading that both models carry the exact same name. This is the first time AMD has employed such a tactic — a strategy typically used by Nvidia to confuse less-informed buyers.
AMD’s promotional material claims the RX 9060 XT is suitable for 1440p gaming, which is questionable for the 8 GB variant. On the bright side, AMD has undercut Nvidia by pricing the RX 9060 XT 16 GB model the same as the RTX 5060 Ti 8 GB, making it the more appealing option for savvy buyers.
