Tencent Pours Millions Into Helldivers 2 Devs – Arrowhead’s Future Gets a Massive Chinese Boost!

FromSoftware and Ubisoft have already cashed in, but now it’s Arrowhead Game Studios’ turn: Tencent has injected millions into the makers of Helldivers 2. In a deal revealed in 2024, the Chinese giant picked up a 15% stake in the studio, opening new international horizons.

Tencent’s investment history goes well beyond supporting Call of Duty: Mobile—they’ve been sinking serious cash into many of the gaming world’s biggest players. The company helped FromSoftware land the Elden Ring IP (previously held by Bandai Namco) and even created a new subsidiary with Ubisoft. Now, their latest move targets Sweden’s Arrowhead Game Studios, the team behind Helldivers 2: the latest reports confirm that Tencent bought a 15.75% share for a whopping $80 million in 2024. The other 84.24% remains in the hands of founders Johan Pilestedt, Emil Englund, Malin Hedstrom, Peter Lindgren, and Anton Stenmark. And while Sony published Helldivers 2, it doesn’t actually own the company.

“It’s hilarious, and I’m incredibly proud of what the team has achieved. Above all, it’s proof that what we do resonates with the player base,” said Pilestedt. According to Dagens Industri, Arrowhead Game Studios brought in 959 million Swedish krona ($100.2 million) in revenue and 729 million SEK ($76.2 million) in profit.

Chinese Market Access: The Next Big Leap for Arrowhead

After these standout financials, Pilestedt commented on the Tencent deal’s strategic importance. “This move opens up huge opportunities for us in China. Reaching Chinese players is absolutely vital in today’s gaming world,” he said. Tencent’s stake will also help fund Arrowhead’s next major project, which the studio recently confirmed will be fully self-funded.
