Lim Pik-Sen had a decades-long career, but she may be best known for her role in FromSoftware’s games.
According to The Malay Mail, the Malaysian-born British actress passed away on Monday, June 9, at the age of 80. She had an extensive career in British theater, film, and television. Her voice is also familiar to us as she voiced the opening scenes of Dark Souls and Dark Souls 3. Her work in the two action RPGs totaled only seven minutes, but her haunting narration of the fictional story of Dark Souls gave the game a sense of seriousness and mystery.
She deftly set the stage for the mythology of both games and established the existential stakes of the story before players wake up in the swamp of Dark Souls‘ early levels. Lim also delivered an unnerving, mind-bending line that haunts Dark Souls fans to this day. One such line is “And the Furtive Pygmy, so easily forgotten.”
Lim was born in Penang, Malaysia, in 1944, when the area was under Japanese imperial occupation during World War II. In 1978, she told The Straits Times that she moved to the UK in 1961 to pursue an acting career against her family’s wishes. She appeared in dozens of British television shows, including Doctor Who, as well as numerous stage productions. Most recently, she appeared in The Nevers in 2024 and Vampire Academy in 2023.
“She was a joyous person, full of love, laughter, and mischief. She was so much fun to be around, and her gift for comedy was such that you always felt safe in front of an audience with her. Her unique voice and vivacious energy carried us all along. I was lucky enough to direct her in a couple of play readings, and I discovered new levels of her talent with each one. She was so affectionate, witty, brilliantly scabrous, and honest about the difficulties actors of our heritage face in this industry—unlike many others who try to gloss over it,” wrote fellow actor Daniel York Loh on Facebook.
May she rest in peace.
