MOVIE NEWS – The DCU is bringing in another Marvel alum: in this upcoming action series, a Birds of Prey member gets recast and a renowned action filmmaker takes charge, promising a fresh direction for the genre.
According to Nexus Point News, DC Studios is eyeing Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning) to play the new Huntress (Helena Bertinelli) in a Korean-language TV series currently in development. In this version, the character will be half-Korean, half-Italian, with Jung Byung-gil (The Villainess) set to write and direct. The Huntress series is just one of several international projects in the pipeline. Previously, Mary Elizabeth Winstead played Huntress in the 2020 film Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).
If the show gets made, expect a series set and spoken almost entirely in Korea, as DC Studios looks to expand the superhero genre into new markets and distinguish the new DCU from both the old DCEU and its rivals. It’s a move that also gives international filmmakers a shot at superhero storytelling. The project is not officially greenlit yet, but it may be the series James Gunn once teased as “my favorite project nobody even knows about yet”.
What About the Old Birds of Prey Cast?
It’s currently unknown if any of the Birds of Prey cast will return for the new DCU, but chances are most, if not all, will be recast. Despite positive reviews, the film’s $200 million global box office was considered a flop. Directed by Cathy Yan, it starred Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Huntress), Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Black Canary), Rosie Perez (Renee Montoya), Ella Jay Basco (Cassandra Cain), Ewan McGregor (Black Mask), and Chris Messina (Victor Zsasz).
One likely holdover is Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), who already worked with James Gunn in The Suicide Squad—partly considered canon in the new DCU. Harley isn’t a major player yet, but DC Studios is eager to keep Robbie in the fan-favorite role. Gunn appears to be selectively carrying over DCEU elements, so returns are still possible even with a fresh slate.
