Nightdive Studios and id Software have revamped the classic games Heretic and Hexen, which are now available on almost every platform.
The publisher of Heretic and Hexen, Bethesda (owned by Microsoft), has released the games for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch at a price of $15 (about 6,000 forints). They’re available on Xbox Game Pass too. A physical release is planned as well, but it’s being handled by Limited Run Games, which is known for a less-than-stellar reputation. Alongside the base games, the package features two new episodes, online co-op and multiplayer support, behind-the-scenes extras, community mods, and accessibility options.
Step into the modernized editions of the two spellcasting shooters that defined a genre. Built by Raven Software on a modified DOOM engine, Heretic and Hexen were released in 1994 and 1995, boldly pushing first-person shooters into new realms. These innovative cult classics introduced groundbreaking features like inventory systems, vertical aiming, and distinct character classes, forever changing the future of first-person action games. This upgraded and restored version brings Heretic and Hexen to new audiences and longtime fans alike, with wider platform and language support than ever before. Whether you’re returning to these dark worlds or discovering them for the first time, an epic legacy awaits.
The bundle includes Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders, Hexen: Beyond Heretic, Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel, plus two brand-new episodes created by id Software and Nightdive Studios (Heretic: Faith Renewed, Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur). In total, Heretic + Hexen offer 117 campaign maps and 120 deathmatch maps. Online, cross-platform deathmatch and co-op are supported for up to 16 players, with local split-screen deathmatch and co-op for up to eight players. You also get a toggleable, enhanced Tome of Power soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult, and mod support with an in-game mod browser for community-made mods.
On top of that, the package features improved performance thanks to multithreaded rendering (supporting up to 4K and 120 FPS), a Vault section showing original concept art and unused sprites, accessibility features (updated UI, improved legibility, contrast and screen FX settings, text-to-speech), modern controller support, a weapon wheel for fast weapon swaps, a balance toggle (original/enhanced), quick save/load support, widescreen support, numerous engine fixes, and translations in twelve new languages.
Heretic + Hexen are available everywhere except for Nintendo Switch 2. What other surprises will QuakeCon have in store?
