Sandfall Interactive Might Leave RPGs Behind After Expedition 33 [VIDEO]

Don’t get too attached to what Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 achieved — its creators are already looking in a new direction. Guillaume Broche, the creative mind behind the acclaimed title, says Sandfall Interactive may not return to the RPG genre for their next project, aiming instead for total creative freedom.

The French studio Sandfall Interactive, responsible for the surprise hit Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is already planning its next game. However, the future may look very different from the turn-based RPG that brought them global recognition. According to creative director Guillaume Broche, the team doesn’t want to be tied down by genres or formulas, preferring instead to explore fresh, unrestricted ideas.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Broche explained that while the team isn’t closing the door on RPGs entirely, their main goal is to avoid creative repetition. “We don’t want to be restricted by story, art style, or gameplay in whatever we do next,” he said. “We just want it to feel authentic and made with love.” The comment arrives at a pivotal time for the studio, as Expedition 33 continues to be hailed as one of 2025’s most celebrated games, selling over five million copies and generating GOTY buzz. The team is currently preparing free content to thank fans for their support.

A Small Team With Big Ambitions

Despite its success, Sandfall Interactive isn’t planning to expand its workforce or juggle multiple projects. Broche noted that the studio, which employs around 30 people, prefers to focus on one game at a time. “We work on one project, then another,” he said, emphasizing that quality and creative control take precedence over growth. This measured approach reflects a commitment to independence and artistry rather than chasing market trends.

With its philosophy rooted in creative freedom and sincerity, Sandfall Interactive is determined to evolve without losing its identity. If Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 proved what the team could achieve within the RPG framework, their next project might show just how far their imagination can go beyond it.
